CDMA – Code Duplex Multiple Access
GSM – Global System for Mobile communications
Like that made any sense. These are competing technologies. While GSM uses SIM (subscriber identity module) CDMA based phones are tied to a carrier by their ESN (electronic serial number). While in North America, Europe and Australia GSM phones are locked to a particular carrier service they may be unlocked for a small fee for independent unlocking services. CMDA phones, on the other hand do not use SIMs and cannot be unlocked.
