Homeless but Wireless
I took a short course on City Government at UC Berkeley recently and we had to create an individual research proposal that we felt would better the city. If you've ever visited Berkeley you've probably seen a lot of homeless people and you might question as why such a problem exist. A "light bulb!" and "Aha!" later I visited homeless shelters and spoke to staff and volunteers there asking them the crux of the matter as to why people are homeless. After sifting through various areas within the realm of homelessness I came upon homeless communication. I know it sounds crazy, why do you think I'm putting this out?

Yoomba! - Email Calling First off, Yoomba has no affiliation with my last name, although you have to admit it has that cool factor like Hambaba. But jokes aside, Yoomba claims to be the world's first open communications experience which gives you the ability to talk through your email for free, globally. P2P style structure to make calls, sound familiar? So what makes this different from Skype and other VoIP clients? A very small change that it inserts a icons on your online (Gmail, Hotmail, etc) and offline (Outlook) email clients to call your contacts and the best part is, you don't have to set up a separate user name and password.

The internet is becoming a smaller world terms of finding and managing information. Major improvements in publishing content easily such as blogs (even mirco-blogs) and social networks have made it much easier for anyone to publish content in a short period of time. The growth in such content can be seen in the massive expansion of the “blogosphere” and the presence of a wise array of social networks. Also, with the website syndication such as RSS (Really Simple Syndication), ATOM, and others becoming more popular and widely used, great innovations in managing such great content in simple formats literally brings the World Wide Web (WWW) to your desktop. With any simple Feed reader such as Google Reader, Microsoft Outlook, etc, you will never have to browse a website again. Well that's great you say. What does it matter?

Google Maps - Street View

Another day, another release by Google. Lately Google releases have been geared towards providing more service in their current products while also creating content. The popular internet proverb, "Content is King" has finally been realized in Google's development. Street Views on Google Maps allows you to tour streets in cities in 360 view basically an extension of Panoramic photography. This addition is great especially if you want to view the area you will be visiting beforehand from a human's eye view. And you thought bird's eye view was cool! This will of course open more opportunities for Google Adwords and was probably one of the main objectives especially with word that publishers might be able to profit from Adsense if they utilize Google Maps on their websites.

Google GearsGoogle Gears is the latest creation from Google, but this product didn't go through the Google Labs as other famous Google products have before it (ie Google Docs, Google Maps, Google Desktop, and more. It seems Google has been working on this concept for some time and there has been a lot of rumors about Google entering Microsoft's arena: Software Applications. Google's approach is rather unique because they first built great online applications and now they are making them available offline.
