Can you hear me now? A little too well
Recently on my way to the gym with a good friend of mine I heard an entire conversation while both of us were waiting at the traffic light. My windows were rolled up. The truck next to me had their windows nearly rolled up too, yet the voice was pretty loud. Lo and behold it was a girl driving a truck many sizes too big and carrying a conversation on her cell phone without volume control. Yes, I could hear her clearly! That brings up interesting questions about what are the proper etiquettes of cell phone usage. What is ok? Here are 10 tips to make your surroundings a tech friendly environment.

1. Well you probably already gathered this one. Yes, make sure your conversation stays between you and the person you are talking to on your phone. When people can hear you despite the fact their windows are rolled up, that is a problem.

2. When you’re in the car, roll up the windows, so that noise from outside doesn’t make you want to talk louder.

3. Of course, our conversations can’t occur in a total vacuum, so find an area that isn’t so populated.

4. While at the movies, turn phones on silent. Answering a phone is way beyond common sense, but let’s admit it, in some cases it’s necessary. Try sitting at the end of a row so that you won’t have to disturb twenty people while you’re trying to move out to answer you call.

5. Sometimes the low quality Bluetooth headsets make our voices less audible when we speak through the microphone. Find out which design is best suited for your needs.

6. Eye contact is important. What? Seriously, think about it. If you are using a Bluetooth headset and there is a person looking at you, and you are looking at them, and making extravagant hand signals, they’re obviously going to get the wrong message or think that you are addressing them. Be mindful of that.

7. The midterm jingle. This is a popular one when in school. During a test a cell phone ring with the most annoying tone will always go off. Turn it off! Or at least put the phone on silent.

8. Cell phones should be sanitary. Since we’re always in constant contact with phones, bringing them to the closest proximities of our face, keep them clean. That means, if your cell phone has fallen in the toilet, it needs to be thoroughly cleaned before actual use. Let alone letting others use it.

9. Think of the environment. Cell phone batteries contain chemicals which are harmful. Recycle old cell phones!

10. And the most important rule of thumb. The Golden rule. Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you.
